Tests & procedures
Novant Health Piedmont Women's Care works to make it easy for you to get the testing and treatment you need for gynecologic concerns. Our skilled providers complete a number of procedures in our office, including:
If you have had an abnormal Pap test result, your provider might recommend a colposcopy procedure. A colposcopy involves using a magnifying device to look closely at your vulva, vagina and cervix. If your provider sees a problem, she might take a small sample of tissue to examine under a microscope. Do not douche, or use tampons or vaginal medicines for 24 hours before a colposcopy. You will empty your bladder just before the colposcopy. You can take pain reliever before the procedure to minimize discomfort.
LEEP, or loop electrosurgical excision procedure involves using a thin, low-voltage electrified wire loop to remove abnormal tissue from the cervix. In some cases, a vinegar or iodine solution is used to make abnormal cells more visible. Oral or intravenous pain medication is often used along with medication to numb the cervix.
Endometrial ablation uses a laser, heat, electricity or other tool to destroy the uterine lining. Endometrial ablation can put an end to heavy vaginal bleeding for women who are done having babies. It can eliminate the need for a hysterectomy for some women.
Advanced laparoscopic surgery
The providers at Novant Health Piedmont Women's Care are skilled in advanced laparoscopic surgery for a variety of gyencologic conditions. Laparoscopic, or minimally invasive, surgery often has a shorter recovery time and lower risk of infection than traditional surgery methods. Should you need gynecologic surgery, your provider will review all options and help you make the best decision for you.
